About Enlight’ning 2014 (archived at right)
Welcome to Our Fledgling Online Issue
Enlight’ning has had a successful print tradition for twelve years, running before any of us were in school. As much as we love the physical touch of print, we decided to make a great leap this year by transitioning to an online publication. Enlight’ning Online can now publish a greater variety of mediums, including more photography, as well as music and film, representing a wider range of the creative work of Harker Middle School’s students. Leaps of this magnitude are never simple to accomplish, and our initial edition of the digital magazine has some rough edges. As you wander through this construction zone of a website, we hope that the stellar works included in this year’s publication are still able to shine through the dust.
We did not include a theme this year, in an effort to receive a wider variety of offerings. A dark theme has coalesced on its own, however, at least in the fiction offered here: dystopia. Our imaginations have been fired by the films and novel series of this year, 2013-14, with their protagonists fighting against a bleak future. Our own future, here at Enlight’ning, is brighter. This is just the beginning. Next year we will be including blogs by student artists at the middle school, and even some who have graduated into the Upper School and beyond, and are still hard at it: creating art, music and worlds of their own imaginings. We hope someday Enlight’ning may serve as a central hub of arts at the middle school, inspiring its readers to even more daring creative adventures. Until then, enjoy the works of your fellow students as you browse Enlight’ning in a new form that we believe is the future–-ahead of schedule.
Thank You,
Praveen Batra, Nastya Grebin, and Andrew Semenza
